Malaysia Unveils Six Homegrown Chips, Including SkyeChip’s MARS1000 Edge-AI Processor
Malaysia unveiled six locally designed semiconductor products with an estimated combined sales potential of RM300 million on October 16, as the government tries to move the country from making and testing chips toward designing and owning the technology, Malay Mail reported. Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Nasir launched the products at the Grand Hyatt in Kuala Lumpur, saying the next milestone is customer adoption, industry qualification and scaling the designs into commercial products.
Two of the six are aimed squarely at artificial intelligence. SkyeChip’s MARS1000 is an edge-AI processor for cameras, robots and factory systems, while MaiStorage’s aiDAPTIV+ provides storage for AI personal computers and servers. SiliconX showed what was described as the first homegrown field-programmable gate array in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The rest are Infinecs’ Maxwell automotive power regulator, a Weeroc Space power controller for satellites and Alphaswift’s FC Mini flight controller for autonomous drones.
All six came from companies in the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park. Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said its two sites in Puchong and Cyberjaya house 407 engineers across 20 companies; Puchong is nearly full, and Cyberjaya is preparing to expand from one occupied floor to three.
What it means in practice
Akmal pointed to the partnership with Arm for access to design IP and to the National Semiconductor Strategy’s goal of training 60,000 engineers, with the Arm On-Demand Training programme targeting 10,000 IC design specialists over four years. Amirudin cited the Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia, which has trained around 850 engineers, and the Ehsan Semiconductor Fund, which aims to raise RM100 million for chip and AI start-ups.
Edge chips serve a different market from the imported accelerators behind UTM’s Blackwell GPU supercomputer or the planned national AI compute exchange, but they let Malaysian firms own a slice of AI hardware value rather than only hosting it, a theme that also runs through the sovereign AI cloud for classified government data.
Akmal also urged federal and state coordination, responding to Sarawak’s recent gallium nitride chip by saying a small country must rely on each state’s strengths. What to watch: first customer wins for MARS1000 and aiDAPTIV+, qualification results for the automotive and space parts, and the first Ehsan fund investments.
